The Khulani Arts and Craft Studio is situated on the premises of the Khulani Children’s
Shelter. This Project seeks to be an effective development tool for the children at the
Shelter, as well as other children and adults in the community. The project has improved the
opportunities for children growing up amidst poverty and violence in KwaZulu-Natal by
supporting personal expression and empowerment, skills development, intergenerational
connection and community building and transformation. It shares and preserves the heritage
of the African culture by teaching the significance of African art, beadwork, pottery and
crafts, as well as traditional music and dance.
The project has created a richness of cultural expression and provides a sense of
community. It is through arts and culture as a means of personal discovery and
empowerment, as well as knowledge of and experience in the business that the project has
fostered hope and opportunity with our community. The project has provided artists with a
sustainable income and a percentage of the income goes towards the daily operation
expenses of the Shelter. It has also produced unique and hand-crafted arts and beadwork
jewellery which can be exported.
